Why Hearing Loss is More Common in Adults Than You Think

Struggling to hear your family during dinner, turning up the television volume higher than everyone else, or constantly asking people to repeat themselves? Adult hearing loss is one of the most underdiagnosed health conditions in Pakistan. Because gradual hearing loss develops slowly over months or years, many adults do not realize how much clarity they have lost until everyday communication becomes exhausting.

According to international health statistics, approximately 1 in 3 adults over the age of 60 experiences significant hearing impairment. However, hearing loss is increasingly affecting younger adults in their 20s, 30s, and 40s due to urban noise exposure, continuous headphone use at high volumes, and untreated ear infections.

Recognizing the Early Warning Signs

  • Muffled Speech: Feeling that people are mumbling rather than speaking clearly, especially women and young children whose voices have higher frequencies.
  • Difficulty in Background Noise: Struggling to follow conversations in restaurants, family gatherings, or busy markets.
  • Tinnitus (Ringing in the Ears): Hearing a persistent buzzing, whistling, hissing, or ringing sound in one or both ears.
  • Telephone Struggles: Having to switch the phone to one particular ear or rely on speakerphone.
  • Listening Fatigue: Feeling mentally exhausted or experiencing headaches after prolonged social interaction.

Conductive vs. Sensorineural Hearing Loss: What is the Difference?

1. Conductive Hearing Loss (Outer & Middle Ear)

Occurs when sound waves cannot mechanically travel from the outside world into the inner ear. Common causes include:

  • Impacted earwax (cerumen impaction).
  • Chronic fluid behind the eardrum (glue ear / serous otitis media).
  • Perforated eardrum caused by trauma, cotton bud injury, or recurrent infections.
  • Otosclerosis (calcification of the stapes hearing bone).

Treatment: Most conductive hearing losses are 100% reversible through medical cleaning, grommet placement, or reconstructive surgery such as Tympanoplasty or Stapedotomy.

2. Sensorineural Hearing Loss (Inner Ear & Nerve)

Occurs when the microscopic hair cells in the cochlea or the auditory nerve fibers are damaged. Causes include aging (presbycusis), prolonged loud noise exposure, ototoxic medications, or sudden viral inflammation (SSNHL).

Treatment: Mild to moderate sensorineural loss is managed with precision digital hearing aids. For severe to profound hearing loss where hearing aids offer no speech discrimination, Cochlear Implant Surgery is the gold-standard treatment.

Sudden Hearing Loss: A True Medical Emergency

If you experience sudden hearing loss in one ear—often accompanied by a "pop," a feeling of fullness, or intense ringing—do not wait. Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss (SSNHL) must be evaluated by an ENT specialist within 48 to 72 hours. Prompt intervention with oral steroids and direct intratympanic steroid injections can fully restore hearing that would otherwise be permanently lost.
